TEMPLE, Texas – Temple ISD is very excited to announce new welding and auto mechanic courses taught in conjunction with Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Waco. On Monday, 9/8/14, TSTC will come to the Auto Tech and Advanced Auto Tech classes at Temple High School’s Career and Technical Education Center from 8:20am – 11:54am. The representatives from TSTC will give a brief presentation and then begin the registration process for Temple High School (THS) students. Once registered, THS students will be in high school and college at the same time.

This is the first year for this program under a new partnership with TSTC. TISD Career and Technology Education (CTE) teachers went through special training last school year to become certified instructors at TSTC, allowing them to teach these college level classes at the high school.

Working in conjunction with Temple Machine Shop (TMS), and using CTE’s new milling machine purchased by the Temple Industrial Foundation, this will allow welding students to graduate with a Level 1 Production Welding Certificate. With that certification, students can immediately begin working as a professional welder at a business like TMS; a job that is in demand in the Temple area, and pays well.

Similarly, our Auto Tech students will graduate with their certification and can begin working as an auto mechanic. We already have a THS student working locally in Temple at Garlyn Shelton, and this is just the beginning.

These programs, along with TISD partnerships with Temple College in Temple and Central Texas College in Killeen that provide dual and articulated credit, and TISD’s collaboration with local businesses like TMS or Baylor Scott & White, position TISD to prepare local students to leave high school qualified to fill the fastest growing and most in-demand jobs in the Temple region.
