Pactiv Corporation announced a major expansion project at its Temple plant expected to draw close to 100 new jobs to the city and the surrounding Bell County region.
In Temple, the company employs 700 full-time workers.
Pactiv plans to upgrade its local facility by investing $8.3 million in capital, which will result in an addition of 86 new full-time employees. The primary goal of the expansion is to produce a new product line. The expansion is expected to be complete in November, according to Cynthia Jackson, Temple Economic Development Corp. marketing director.
A portion of the funding for the expansion was made possible by a tax abatement agreement signed in early June, allowing Pactiv a five-year agreement with the city to defer a percentage of taxes, as long as the company provides the number of jobs promised, and completes the expansion.
Temple College trustees approved a tax abatement for Pactiv at a board meeting earlier this week. “We have been working diligently with Pactiv to come to an agreement regarding this proposed expansion,” Lee Peterson, TEDC president, said. “Once again, Temple’s business-friendly environment and our city leadership’s willingness to assist a local company as they plan expansions of their operations, has proven to be a deciding factor.”
The company has been long-time resident of Temple’s Rail Park at Central Pointe. The expansion project will include the installation of 12 additional waste bag manufacturing lines, those primarily used to produce Hefty and other private-label brands.
Pactiv’s project includes designing and constructing additional infrastructure work to its facilities and utilities in an effort to accommodate the new manufacturing lines. Plans currently call for the new lines to be installed within the existing open plant space.
A leader in the consumer and food service/food packaging market, Pactiv had sales of about $3.4 billion in 2009.
Pactiv’s Hefty brand products include waste bags, slider storage bags, disposable tableware and foil cookware.
Pactiv’s foodservice/food packaging offers one of the broadest lines in the industry, providing food packaging for the supermarket, packer/processor, institutional, foodservice, and restaurant industries.
More than 80 percent of the company’s sales come from market sectors in which it holds the No. 1 and No. 2 market share position.
Pactiv is an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of Reynolds Group Holdings Limited. Reynolds acquired Pactiv in November 2010.
